"British Energy, the UK nuclear power company, jumped 48½ to 711p on speculation that French energy giant EDF is planning an offer for the company. French newspaper La Tribune sparked the rumours, reporting that EDF's directors had agreed to bid for the whole company, valuing it at about £7bn."
